Towards versatile light shaping and generation: nonlinear and linear optical approaches

Optics and photonics play crucial roles in our society. Many fields, such as telecommunication,
sensing, imaging or spectroscopy, depend on our ability to engineer optical systems and sub-system which
satisfy market needs. Ideally, given the dynamic nature of such fields, optical sub-systems and photonic
devices should be flexible, reconfigurable and efficient. While many components are required for any given
application, the light source is a determining element. Our ability to shape and generate light in an efficient
and versatile fashion can enhance the performance of the entire system and open opportunities for novel
applications.

In this talk I will present some of our work on the engineering of versatile light sources and focus on three
examples: Nyquist pulse train carver for high efficiency data transmission, cavity-less light source
architectures for highly versatile mid infrared light generation and theta cavity thulium laser for enhanced 2
micron lasing performances. I will show that by leveraging nonlinear and linear techniques, approaches
sometimes thought as unconventional can provide high versatility and performance.
