Consumer Electronics Meetup: From radiation to immersion

November 24, 2016 @ 6:00 pm - 8:00 pm

Co-sponsored by: IEEE Montreal Section

The recently formed Montreal Chapter of the Consumer Electronics Society cordially invites you to attend its first technical activity. The event consists of two technical talks that will help to show how broad the subjects in this field are:

1. Haptics in Consumer Devices

Haptics, the programmable sense of touch in computer interfaces, is finding widespread adoption in consumer and industrial devices. Haptic applications are now present in a broad range of markets including Mobile phones, Gaming, Automotive, Virtual Reality and Medical Simulation. This talk will focus on a broad overview of haptic applications, and the ecosystem building blocks of creation, distribution and playback. The key values of haptic technologies, being confirmation, immersion and rich communication will also be explored.

2. Electromagnetic Compatibility (EMC) Concerns in Home Electronic Devices

Electromagnetic Compatibility (EMC) in terms of definition is addressed to a device that is compatible with its electromagnetic environment with no interference and does not corrupt the functionality of other devices in its vicinity by waves’ propagation. Progress of electronics technology emerges the newer generations of apparatuses with a reduced size of electronics. Hence, their circuitry becomes smaller and more sophisticated; more circuits are being crowded into less space, which increases the probability of electromagnetic interference, indeed.  However, the today’s designers need to do more than just make it work in electronic products to ensure the correct functionality of devices released to the business community once they are in the vicinity of other electronics; no interference emitted, neither absorbed! On the other hand, from the users’ point of view, they prefer to have lots of electronics together which work properly and nobody like the interference in his/her laptop while talking on the cell-phone! So, the products must be designed to work in the “real world”, with other equipment nearby, and to comply with government electromagnetic compatibility (EMC) regulations. Hence, some standards, regulations and safety issues must be taken into consideration by the venders to provide a less radiant environment in human’s life.
