Broadband Beamforming using Nested Arrays and Filterbanks

ABSTRACT

Broadband beamforming has many applications in various areas such as radar, sonar, communication systems, speech processing and radio astronomy. A broadband beamformer is presented based on using nested arrays, multi-rate techniques and multi-dimensional filters. The use of appropriate subsampling in space and time for each nested subarray leads to signals with the same region of support (ROS) in the 2D frequency domain for all subarrays. This ROS will be shown to be the top octave of the signal bandwidth and can be used to achieve high selectivity at high as well as low frequencies. Examples of the beampatterns obtained using the proposed approach for linear and planar arrays will be shown and possible applications will be discussed.
