Silicon Photonics Integrated circuits for future generation Optical networks
October 13, 2015 @ 2:00 pm - 3:30 pm
Widespread in metro networks, WDM technology can offer advantages in terms of bandwidth capabilities and scalability as well as in all future networks. Usually conventional optical switching devices are based on discrete optics components which are costly and bulky. Considering the increase of broadband services and bandwidth request over time, there is a need for new components which are low cost, easily scalable, with a reduced footprint and energy efficiency. Photonic integration, and in particular Silicon Photonics, has the highest potential in the implementation of low cost switching devices with low power consumption, high miniaturization and high level of integration. The WDM photonic components based on the integration of photonic functions on chip low power consumption, high miniaturization, high level of integration and large capacity represent a key enabling technology for the deployment of future networks such as 5G mobile networks. The presentation will focus on the latest components and sub-system developed at the Scuola Superiore Sant’Anna in Pisa by different groups of the TeCIP.
