Seminar: Phase-Conjugated Twin Waves – For Communication Beyond the Kerr Nonlinearity Limit

April 30, 2014 @ 2:00 pm - 4:00 pm

Fiber Kerr nonlinearity imposes a limit on the achievable transmission performance and capacity of optical fiber communication link. In a recent Nature Photonics article (coauthored by X. Liu, A. R. Chraplyvy, P. J. Winzer, R. W. Tkach, and S. Chandrasekhar), we show that co-propagating a signal with its phase conjugated twin along a long-haul optical fiber link makes it possible to mitigate unwanted nonlinear distortions and improve the effective signal-to-noise ratio by over 5 dB, beyond the 3-dB gain expected in the linear regime. By using this technique, we succeeded in transmitting a 400-Gb/s superchannel over 12,800 km of fiber. In this seminar, we will present the principle and implementation of this technique, and discuss its potential benefits, tradeoffs, and limitations. We will also discuss other advanced topics in the field of coherent optical communications, such as digital compensation of fiber nonlinearity, Tb/s superchannel transmission, and photonic integration.
