Integrated Photonics for Scalable Classical, Nonlinear and Quantum Optics
June 29, 2016 @ 1:30 pm - 2:30 pm
We are witnessing rapid growth of interest in integrated photonics, especially silicon photonics, which might improve communication and measurement instruments in the coming years. Traditional ways of optical communication between computers, or between Earth and satellites, are already being replaced by integrated photonics. In the next decade, integrated photonics may be more widely used, for earth and space science, precision (PNT) measurements, secure data infrastructure, medical devices, etc. But Moore / Dennard scaling does not apply to photonics in the usual ways. An expansion of integrated photonics from a niche component to a cornerstone engineering technology (which benefits human life, knowledge and commerce) depends on significantly improving performance compared to today’s optical systems. In this context, I will present examples of my group’s research in three areas:
- silicon photonics to make transceivers more intelligent,
- “optical radios” using photonic circuits,
- quantum photonics
