RF and Photonics Laboratory Safety Workshop
May 13 @ 10:00 am - 1:30 pm
Sensitive laboratory equipment — including high-speed RF systems and optical devices — is highly vulnerable to seemingly minor incidents such as electrostatic discharge (ESD), the use of damaged RF cables, and dust. Even small handling mistakes can lead to costly repairs or replacements, creating a significant financial burden. To address these critical issues, the INRS Photonics Student Association and the INRS IEEE Student Branch are excited to host a workshop for the students and interns working in photonics and RF laboratories. The goal is to ensure participants acquire safety and handling skills essential for the lab environment. Workshop Highlights: Safe Handling of RF Equipment: Best practices for preventing damage and extending the life of high-frequency devices. Safe Handling of Optical Instruments: Guidelines to maintain delicate optical systems and avoid connector damage. Live Demonstrations: RF and photonics lab demos showcasing proper techniques. Co-sponsored by: IEEE Canadian Foundation & OPTICA-SPIE Student Chapter at INRS Agenda: Schedule: 10:00 AM – Arrival and reporting 10:15 AM – 11:30 AM – Presentation (including 15 min Q&A) by Matthew Torre, RFuW Solution Engineer, Keysight Technologies, Inc. 11:30 AM – 12:00 PM – Photonics Lab Presentation 12:00 PM – 1:00 PM – Pizza, drinks, and a networking session 1:00 PM – 1:30 PM – RF Probing Station Demonstration by Prof. Tarek Djerafi This is a great opportunity to build your technical confidence, network with industry professionals, and ensure you are prepared for real-world lab environments.
