Unconventional electrical machines: optimized topologies and design methodologies

May 24, 2019 @ 2:00 pm - 3:30 pm

The Department of Electrical Engineering at the École de Technologie Supérieure and the Power Electronics Society (PELS) chapter in collaboration with the Industrial Electronics Society (IES), Industry Applications Society (IAS), and Power & Energy Society (PES) chapters in the IEEE Montreal Section cordially invites you to a seminar presented by Dr. Sami Hlioui, Senior Lecturer at the Conservatoire National des Arts et Métiers à Paris (CNAM – Paris – France).

Seminar Abstract

The expectations of electromechanical conversion systems have evolved considerably and become more complex. However, the electric machine, central organ of these conversion chains, must meet conflicting requirements: high torques, high density, intermittent operation, high efficiencies over extended operating ranges, and so on. This has led to the search for new machine topologies as well as the development of new dimensioning methodologies in order to propose “better” solutions, as “suitable” solutions are no longer satisfactory. The work we are doing on electromagnetic transducers in our SETE research group of the SATIE laboratory focuses mainly on these two themes: enhancing the operational features of electromagnetic transducers and improving their electromagnetic performance. Various topologies and concepts of electrical machines are proposed (topologies of synchronous machines with double excitation, electrical machine with flux commutation, multiairgaps, etc.) to meet specific needs and/or to bring improvements in energy yields for applications to intermittent operation. Modeling and optimization sizing methodologies are also developed to respond to new design issues in electromechanical conversion chains.
