Tour at the Beauharnois Hydroelectric Generating Facility (Hydro-Québec)

IEEE WIE McGill Student Branch and IEEE WIE Montreal are organizing an industrial visit to the Beauharnois Hydroelectric Generating Station, one of the world’s largest hydropower facilities.

Come join us in this unique industrial tour of the Beauharnois Station with specially trained guides. Seize the opportunity to learn about renewable energy sources of hydropower in Quebec and discover the giant machinery, architecture and how electricity is generated. Expand your professional and social network with WIE and IEEE members.

The trip will start from Milton Gates, McGill downtown campus (the campus entrance from Rue Milton and Rue University).

 

Note to visitors:

Visitors must present identification* before they can tour the facility:

  • Passport for international students.
  • Passport or driver’s license for Canadian and American citizens.

* Please note that you CANNOT use a PR card as identification.

 

Cameras, cell phones and handbags are prohibited inside the power plant.

The electromagnetic fields in power plants may disrupt pacemaker operation. As a precaution, pacemaker users will not be allowed on the part of the guided tour that takes place inside the power plant. 

 

Tickets:

Tickets are $5 for IEEE members and $15 for non-members.

Tickets will be sold on a first-come, first-serve basis.

12.30 p.m.       Beauharnois information center                                                                                                  

  • Registration and security clearance           

 1.00 p.m.         Visit of the information center

  • Construction stages of the power station
  • Hydraulic power of the river, the channel and management of water
  • Hydroelectric production and electricity transmission

 1.45 p.m.         Visit of the Beauharnois generating station

  • Roof (view of the water intake)
  • Machine room
  • Turbine pit

2.30 p.m.         End of tour

3:45 p.m.         Arrive back at McGill Milton Gates
