Do you want it fast, good, or cheap? Engineering your technical message for any audience

March 22, 2018 @ 6:00 pm - 9:00 pm

Co-sponsored by: IEEE Montréal Section, IEEE Young Professionals Montréal, IEEE Student Branches of Concordia University, École Polytechnique de Montréal, and McGill University, and IEEE Montréal Industrial Relations Committee.

Abstract

Have you ever delivered a presentation with no time restrictions, unlimited resources, and boundless scope? Probably not. But you have had to sit through presentations where speakers believed they had all of the above. You were probably bored and potentially missed valuable information.

Communicating technical information is challenging. You have nuanced problems to address and a limited amount of time to communicate the solutions. Similarly, your audience cannot act on your information unless you acknowledge their constraints – typically the time and money involved in implementing your solutions.

In this presentation, I relate the qualities of the project management triangle—fast, good, and cheap—to professional communication. Understanding what your audience needs and expects, allows you to tailor a message that responds to their constraints and generates results. I also discuss how these qualities can be combined based on audience analysis skills. You can apply these strategies to any communication situation, whether that be a 60-second elevator pitch with a manager or a formal presentation to a group of engineering colleagues.
